Filofax A5 lined paper - a better and cheaper alternative

If you do any amount of writing in your Filofax (and the A5 size is just the right size to do a lot of writing) you'll be shocked by the cost of plain and lined refills. I'm not the first person to suggest this, but it really pays to make your own.

I dug around in the stationery cupboard and found one of these:

This paper is very cheap, but of surprisingly good quality. It's particularly good for fountain pens. If you can't find one of these, look for a pad or wire-bound book that is A5 and has perforated sheets. These ones come away very cleanly:

Be sure to check that the paper is A5-sized AFTER you remove it from the pad. Otherwise, you'll end up with paper that's slightly narrower or shorter than A5. This one is perfect and after punching fits straight into the A5 Filofax:

This is a great way to have paper significantly better than the Filofax packs at a fraction of the price. Buy several pads if you see them on sale.

Ooh - a visit to the Staples website may now be in order :o)

That's exactly what I do, too. It works with almost any type of paper that's approximately the right size.

When I have a bound journal that I want to dismember, sometimes I just attack it myself. When I'm not looking for instant gratification, I take it to the local full-service printer. For a couple of bucks (sometimes free if you ask nicely and they're not busy), they will cut off the spine off the journal and drill the holes you specify. Easy!

This happens relatively often because a lot of journals are inexpensive, but have good-quality paper (that is often pretty, too). And I use up a LOT of paper!

It ends up looking something like this: http://somenotesfromafar.blogspot.com/2011/06/some-good-lookin-filo-paper.html

I use this pad in the back of my A5 Kendal. The pad itself isn't A5 but protrudes about a centimetre over the top of the binder. I've found it's brilliant as I can just pull the pad out when I need to make notes.

I also use the single hole punch from Staples to add holes. Brilliant product.

Ray - I ran to the Staples store yesterday after reading this post but was disappointed to find all pads at 5x8 inches (instead of 5.5x8.3, which is an A5 size). I then checked your post again and I see that the pads in the photo are specifically labeled A5. I had somehow assumed you were in the US, but I guess not! I'll look around and see if I can order these somehow. Thanks for posting!

Oops, meant to say 5.8 x 8.3 inches.
