My new Traveler's Notebook video

I made a short video to show my homemade Field Notes sized Traveler's Notebook. I included a few other tips and showed some DIY inserts that readers of the blog will recognise.

Make an easy kraft file insert for your Midori Traveler's Notebook

I have previously shown how to make a kraft file insert from a file folder. That is pretty easy to do, but today I'm going to show you an even quicker and easier way to create a similar insert.

Start with a regular, A4-size envelope like this:

Mark a horizontal line 210mm from the bottom of the envelope:

Cut along this line and discard the top of the envelope. Here's what you should be left with:

Now fold this piece in half along a vertical line, like this:

What you are going to do now is to mark out and remove a funnel-shaped central piece from the top layer of your envelope only. As shown below, this will leave you with a little folder with a flap at each side the works exactly like a kraft file insert.

This project costs nothing if you start with a used envelope and takes no more than three minutes. It's not quite as sturdy as the real thing (unless you have a really thick envelope, or maybe a tyvek envelope) but it's very easy to quickly replace it if it starts to get tattered with use.

The Filofax-themed Filofax divider set to download and print - A5 and Personal

When I made available some photographic divider sets recently, it was suggested that a set featuring Filofax pictures might be well-received.

I have always admired the Filofax pictures Deborah (DEM) posts on her blog, Thoughts & Exploration, and asked her if she wanted to collaborate on making a set together. She had the hard job of taking the photos (creative photos that are clear, well lit and composed like hers don’t just take themselves), while I had the much easier job of sizing them on the divider templates.

If you want to see all six dividers, you'll have to download a set, but here's a sneak peek of one of them in both sizes.

If you want to celebrate your Filofax love, you can download and make your own set.

You have the choice between A5 dividers and Personal dividers, and there are different versions for those of you printing on A4 and those using Letter paper. Download the file of your choice, print onto card or photo paper, then cut out and punch the dividers.

Course record form now for the A5 Filofax

I recently produced a course record form for the Filofax Personal. When converting this for A5 I was keen to use the extra space that the larger format allowed.

Here is what I arrived at:

You can download and print the insert. You can choose either the editable Word version or the PDF version. Choose the Word file if you want to adapt the layout to your own requirements.

Each version is set up as an A4 document. To use them as A5 inserts, print the document in booklet mode on A4 paper, then use a guillotine to divide each sheet into two and punch the required holes, which the templates are set up with mirrored gutters to accommodate. Or, if you have A5 paper, then either the printer or the PC will scale it to size for you.

Topic divider set for your A5 Filofax to print at home

Remember my Antique and Antiquity topic tabs for the Filofax Personal? Well now there's a version for A5 Filofax users as well. The bigger size and especially the wider page means you get to see more of the pictures, as the example below shows. Personal size is on the left, A5 on the right.

Those of you in North America who have struggled to obtain A4 paper are likely to have even more trouble obtaining A4 card, so I've made a version for you that is based on Letter paper.

Download a free course record insert for your Filofax to track your grades

This one was a request. It allows you to track your progress (or someone else's) in an educational course. There's not much to say about it, so here's how it looks:

If you're ready to start tracking progress, you can download and print the insert. You can choose either the editable Word file or the PDF file. Choose the Word file if you want to play with the layout or text and make it your own.

These are set up for double-sided printing. If you have a duplex printer, set it to flip on the short edge. If you don't then you'll have to print odd-numbered pages and then refeed to print the even-numbered pages on the reverse. You might have to experiment to find out how to refeed the paper.

On one side of each sheet you'll find crop marks. Use a craft knife and a steel ruler to release the Personal pages and punch them. The templates are set up with mirrored gutters to accommodate the holes.

If using the PDF be sure to set it to print at full size as explained here.
